Liberal Democrat Business Secretary, Vince Cable, has visited South Gloucestershire to announce £212.6 million of Government investment in the West of England economy. This ‘Growth Deal’ is designed to create 5,000 new jobs, improve local transport links and give a boost to the region’s hi tech industries.

The package includes £56.6 million for the planned Metro West scheme which will see improved rail services across the region – including half hourly services between Bristol and Yate.

Much of the cash will be spent here in South Gloucestershire including £4.5 million for the University’s of the West of England’s world-leading Robotics Institute at Frenchay and £3 million towards developing cutting-edge technology at the National Composites Centre at Emerson’s Green. £32 million will be spent on new educational facilities including an extension to the Advanced Engineering Centre near Parkway.

The package also includes £15 million to introduce next generation broadband to the region and £20 million to boost walking, cycling and public transport.

Lib Dem Council Group Leader, Ruth Davis said: “This is great news for South Gloucestershire. As well as creating 5,000 new jobs, this investment will bring with it 230 new apprenticeships and allow 1,200 people to get skills training.

“It’s great that we are helping to create high quality jobs in the local area and give our young people the chance of a better future. I’m proud that the Lib Dems have campaigned to put jobs and training at the heart of the Government’s agenda.”
