2011 Manifesto Launch

Action for our Area, our 2011 Manifesto, is the South Glos Lib Dems’ pledge to you. We set out in the document how we will work with South Gloucestershire residents and businesses to prioritise the issues that matter to you.

As part of that commitment, Council Group Leader Cllr Ruth Davis brought together Internet service providers Virgin and BT Open Reach, Government Minister Steve Webb and DCMS (Department for Culture, Media and Sport) spokesperson Don Foster MP to hear about a local business-led campaign asking for better and faster internet access.

Cllr Davis said, “Liberal Democrat Councillors are here to stick up for our communities, work with you and campaign for improvements in our area. To do that, we need to be open, welcome your participation and trust you. We believe in working with residents to solve problems, enabling you and your neighbours to create the community you want. We want to support you in getting a decent home, a decent job and protecting vulnerable people – but doing this without wrecking the planet.”

She continued, “We made this happen because we know you have great ideas already but that you want our help to make things happen that you think are important. We wanted residents and local business to be able to tell the politicians and big business directly what they want and need for their community to be stronger, happier and more successful.

Local campaigner Sachin Singhal said, “There are many streets in Bradley Stoke which are too far from their relevant BT exchanges to get reasonable Broadband Speed and some of them struggle to get even 0.5 Mbps speed on their Internet connection. Virgin Broadband is not available in all the streets of Bradley Stoke which leaves residents with no options but to be stuck with below par Internet speeds in our area. Many people like me living in Bradley Stoke area work in Technology companies based in and around Bristol, they are required to work from home on regular basis and these low speeds are actually detrimental to the working from home option.”

Local Councillor (Bradley Stoke North) Jon Williams said, “We have worked and worked to get Bradley Stoke a heart here in the Willow Brook Centre as we knew it would make it a more attractive place to work, live and raise a family. We’ve successfully campaigned for improvements such as the Bradley Stoke Community School, safer pedestrian crossings and disabled access to the woodlands but there’s still more to be done like better broadband connections, because internet access is so essential for voluntary and social commitments as well as people’s working lives. It really can enhance the value added to your own as well as other’s lives when you get involved in your community. ”

LIB DEM DCMS Committee Chair Don Foster said, “We are very fortunate that the successful West of England region has the trade and industry potential to provide a jumpstart to the national economy. However jobs are not all that it takes to make a happy and healthy society. Liberal Democrats are involved in shaping and working with residents all over South Gloucestershire to enhance their surroundings and increase social, sporting and cultural opportunities. Join with the South Glos Lib Dem candidates to demand ‘Action in your Area’ and help make a better future for us all.”

Pensions Minister Steve Webb MP said, “Good internet connections are an increasingly essential requirement for local businesses and for people who want to work or study at home. The South Gloucestershire economy would benefit hugely form improved broadband services. I welcome government plans for a broadband hub in every community and will work with local Councillors to ensure that South Gloucestershire benefits as soon as possible from this initiative.”
