Lib Dems back Council motion on control of zero hour contracts

South Gloucestershire Lib Dems have backed a motion calling on the Government to consider further action to tackle abuses of zero hour contracts. The motion was backed by all parties after amendments.

The motion welcomes recent moves by the Government to end so called ‘exclusivity clauses’ that stop employees under zero hour contracts from seeking other work.

A Lib Dem amendment to the motion also calls upon the Government to keep the law on zero hour contracts under review, in case it becomes clear that further reforms are needed to stop abuses by employers.

Lib Dem Councillor for Yate North, Mike Drew, who introduced the Lib Dem amendment said: “We are very pleased that the Government is cracking down on exclusivity clauses, which impose an unfair burden on employees with zero hour contracts. I am very pleased that South Gloucestershire Council does not use such clauses with its employees. However there are many other workers who are not so fortunate. We are calling on the Government to do all it can to crack down on such abuses.”
