Tory MP Chris Skidmore presented a petition to South Gloucestershire’s powerful Policy & Resources committee on Monday 7th April, asking them to reconsider the £36 annual charge for green bins.
Lib Dem Cllr Ruth Davis, who chaired the meeting said: “We referred this for debate at the earliest possible appropriate meeting – the Communities committee in early June. I’m eager for the Tories to disclose which services they would cut to cover the over £1m this would cost.
“It’s time for the Tories to be honest. They didn’t know what they wanted to consult on, they didn’t have a thought through alternative plan to charging, they didn’t support our freezing the £36 charge for two years last week – the sooner we debate this petition, the sooner they can stop hiding their planned cuts.”
All Lib Dem members voted to refer the petition to the communities committee meeting on June 4th. All Labour and most Tories abstained, with one Tory voting to delay the debate.
