South Gloucestershire Council took a step towards approving its capital programme on Monday 3rd March when the Resources subcommittee recommended the programme to full council.

The programme deals with some £67m of spending in 2014/15 and 15/16, on major projects – like solar farms, schools energy saving, and rolling out LED street lightning. Other schemes are much smaller.

Liberal Democrat leader Ruth Davis said: “Lots of these projects are going to save us a lot of money within just a few years – helping us to run an efficient, cost-effective council.

“There’s an increasing demand that everything official needs to be done online – applying for jobs, accessing universal credit, even children doing their homework – but not everyone can do this at home. Liberal Democrats added £10k to the budget, which will buy additional computers at Yate, Patchway, Staple Hill, Cadbury Heath, and Filton libraries.”

“This is an example where a little money from us can make a big difference to people’s lives. We need to remove every possible barrier to employment, and helping people online to find work is an important part of this.”

The four desktops and eight laptops will be supplied to the libraries for public use in the coming year.
