Central government is forcing councils to reduce the amount of council tax support given to those who need it most. In South Gloucestershire, the council has to make a £2.5m reduction to benefits.
After months of consultation and planning, leading Councillors today announced the plan that will be proposed to council on December 11th. All the Councillors agreed to a Liberal Democrat proposal that will see the disabled and least well off residents keep almost all of their support.
Cllr Ruth Davis, leader of the Lib Dem group said: “It is vital that we get this scheme right. This will protect the least well off as much as we can, whilst ensuring that those who can pay do. We proposed that residents on income support, or receiving extra payments due to disabilities, will keep almost all of their discount. That’s building a stronger economy in a fairer society.”
