A great place to live and grow old

by admin on 11 June, 2013

South Gloucestershire residents awoke to good news this morning (11th June) – they’re likely to live longer than almost anyone else in the country.

Data released by the Department of Health showed that South Glos had the fifth lowest rate of early death (before 75) out of 150 council areas looked at.

The data looked at common causes of death – Cancer, heart disease and stroke, lung disease, and liver disease. In every single category, South Gloucestershire residents were comfortably ahead of the rest of the country.

Cllr Sue Hope (Liberal Democrat, Cotswold Edge), on the Council’s Health scrutiny committee said: “This confirms what many of us have known for years: South Gloucestershire is an excellent place to live and grow old. We have beautiful open spaces to enjoy, a range of cultural activities, and we’re very healthy.

“This doesn’t mean we should rest, though. We’ve just taken on more powers to promote healthy living in South Gloucestershire, and we’re going to work to climb those places to get to be the very best.

“This also underlines the importance of the bus link we’ve been campaigning for between the new Southmead Hospital, and the Yate/Sodbury area. Good access to excellent hospitals is a vital part of making sure that people can live long and productive lives.”
